Looking Back at My Baby Bump

Edie will be three weeks old tomorrow night, and I still find myself doing a double take every time I walk past a mirror, forgetting for a split second the babe who made my belly so round is now out in the world (and usually in my arms when I'm doing said double take) and no longer a part of my body. I have all kinds of thoughts on my postpartum body I need to flesh out before I share them with you, but first I thought we'd look back at how I changed throughout my pregnancy.

The first photo is from one month--shortly after we'd found out.













I feel so blessed to be in this body, the home and haven for my little love for nine plus months. How can I look at her and then look back on how I changed physically and not see beauty in it? I grew around her to keep her safe as she grew, and that, in my opinion, is a MIRACLE.

40 Weeks Bumpdate

So, here we are, friends--the babe is due and I'm still very pregnant.  No real complaints though--it's  common to go past your due date--we've been prepared for this.  We are very excited, of course, but I'm also feeling a new sense of peace about letting her come when she's ready.  It'll be very soon, no matter what! That doesn't mean we aren't thinking about pulling out all of the natural at-home stops soon--we have our 40 week appointment tomorrow morning and we'll be discussing those kinds of things with our midwife.  The birth center likes to avoid going too far past a due date because they don't want us to have to go through the stress of scheduling an induction date and have it hanging over our heads and forcing us to try and beat the clock, which I really appreciate.  I will say I hope this is our last bumpdate, but she may very well still be cozy where she is next week.


40 WEEKS:

Baby Size: Possibly nearing or at 8 pounds now. Please come soon, homegirl--I don't really want to push out a teenager! :)

Weight Gain: Still at 17 pounds.

Symptoms: Woke up with painful contractions a couple of times this week, but they fizzled and I was eventually able to fall back asleep, so not the real deal.  I get lots of them when I work out, too.  Feeling pretty intense hip and low back discomfort, especially if I do anything for too long--lie down, bounce on my yoga ball, walk, clean, anything. I have to change what I'm doing often.  

Exercise: Well, I kept running six days a week up to my due date! I really can't believe it--that was my "Haha, yeah right--that would look ridiculous" goal.  It makes me want to tell every newly pregnant mama, "You can do it--I am NOT a runner--if I can do it you can do it!"  So my routine this past week has been the same, plus a lot more hip hop dancing randomly throughout the day and running up and down the stairs over and over.  

Cravings:  Daniel fulfilled my fair food craving from last week by bringing home the most incredible gluten free batter recipe and ingredients--we may have spent a good chunk of the weekend making corndogs, fried cheese, fried pickles, and apple fritters.  YUM. What else are you gonna do when you haven't made any plans because you don't know whether or not you'll have a baby this weekend?


Edie, when will your birthday be? We are so excited to meet you!

38 Weeks Bumpdate

We had a few "could this be the beginning of labor?" moments this week, but nothing serious and overall I'm happy to still be pregnant. I've been thinking a lot about this time being the last little bit where it's just my husband and me and it's making me feel like soaking it up rather than wishing it away. We're now less than a month from our first anniversary, and it's been the most beautiful, crazy year! I'm trying to take a step back now, before the babe comes, and remember to continue learning to love him while we're learning to take care of her.


38 WEEKS:

Baby Size: At our 37 week appointment last Monday our midwife estimated baby girl to be about 6.5 pounds already, so she should be around 7 now!

Weight Gain: 17 pounds.

Symptoms: More contractions and a LOT of intense sharp pinching pain up in my business this week.  Also, I made it to week 38 before I woke up with my first stretch marks.  Just a few on the bottom of my belly, which I assume happened now that babe has dropped and is pulling my tummy down. I'm not bothered by them, though, they're proof that I grew a human! I'm also in full-out nesting mode--cleaning and recleaning constantly.

Exercise: Still running 2-3 miles every morning plus weights, squats, yoga, dancing. I've added a mile onto my lunchtime walk and a couple miles onto our evening walks, so now I'm getting in about 10 to 11 miles a day total.  Trying to walk this baby down into position! Also no longer sitting in chairs or on the couch--bouncing on my yoga ball instead.

Cravings:  Mexican food.

17 Weeks Bumpdate

Yesterday I began my 18th week of carrying this babe.  Yesterday I also began hearing my first (many!) bump comments while out in public--at least ten people noticed my belly at church and it was kind of really exciting! I feel like we're rounding out and finally starting to look like a mommy and baby and not just a mommy and one too many hot fudge sundaes.  :)

Aside from honeymooning with my new bump, the past few days have been full of trying not to feel frustrated about my lack of contribution in all of this moving business.  Being pregnant and loading/unloading a truck with furniture and heavy boxes don't mix, and I kind of felt like a bum.  I did help where I felt comfortable, but overall I'm really thankful Daniel has the friends he does.  Thank you, Mark, David, and Ryan for coming over on such short notice and helping everything go so smoothly! 


17 WEEKS:

Baby Size: Pear! A squirmy little pear--I've felt a lot of movement the past few days!

Gender: I'm dying to know!

Weight Gain: Three pounds.  Still wearing all of my normal clothes, but they're definitely fitting differently around my tummy area!

Symptoms: Acne and the inability to get comfortable when I lie down to go to sleep, but feeling really wonderful overall!  

Exercise: Running every morning plus weights/workout videos, walking and yoga every night. I've gotten a LOT slower, I can tell, and my balance is starting to get a little off when I'm doing yoga.  But I'm trying to stay strong and fit for this babe!

Cravings: Chocolate milk. Cheeseburgers and fries. All the healthy stuff, obviously.


I'm off to the grocery store to fill up our new refrigerator!
